“Tradition, Friendship, Family”
In 1899, fifty charter members established La Grange Country Club with goals for golf, athletic and social pursuits. The Village of La Grange was founded in 1879 and had about 4,000 residents when La Grange Country Club was founded. The expansion of new railroad commuter lines westward from the City of Chicago resulted in the establishment of new west suburban villages and the entire area grew steadily. Initial annual membership dues were set at $25 and a century plus commitment to a local community institution was set in place. La Grange Country Club became one of the earliest golf clubs in the greater Chicago area. Golf course architect, Herbert Tweedie, designed the first course, a challenging 9 hole layout, located at the southeast corner of 47th Street and La Grange Road. The Club’s original clubhouse, an H. Van Doren Shaw building, was moved over roads to its current location on Brainard Avenue in 1913 – quite an engineering feat. The design of the new 18 hole golf course at the Club’s new location on Brainard Avenue is attributed to Thomas Bendelow, with major design help from William B. Langford. The 1913 course was designed with a traditional perimeter routing of outer and inner nines. Renovations and enhancements to the golf course have been completed over the years. Most recently, a three year major golf course renovation project was completed in the spring of 2004 by a leading golf course renovation architectural firm, Cornish, Silva and Mungeam.
The Club increased its membership limits to 275 in 1921 as local residents sought to enjoy the Club’s amenities. Clubhouse and facilities renovations and additions have continued throughout the years to meet the changing needs of a growing La Grange Country Club. Most recently in 2015, the entire clubhouse underwent a full renovation to portray an updated, shabby-chic design. A large golf pro shop with club and golf cart storage and a new bathhouse were built in 1997. A vibrant tennis program has been part of the athletic endeavors at the Club since as early as 1916. Today, a new tennis Pro Shop and four lighted Har-Tru clay courts allow a complete tennis program with adult and junior leagues, competition and instruction. The swimming pool and its programs began operating in 1937 and the Club’s members enjoy a relaxing pool area and new bathhouse. La Grange Country Club has been a participant in the West District Swim League since 1937, providing strong swimming/diving competition for member’s children.
La Grange Country Club has always adhered to its motto “Tradition, Friendship, Family.” Its storied history has been marked by a membership that includes generations from the same families, events, facility renovations, a strong, challenging golf course and a dedication to offer the best in family oriented sports and social activities for its membership. La Grange Country Club has made its mark in both Chicago and national golf history by successfully hosting the United States Golf Association Women’s Opens in both 1974 and 1981.
La Grange Country Club offers a complete and functional range of dining and banquet settings from casual member dining to sponsored party events, business meetings and weddings. The families, dedicated professional staff and employees of La Grange Country Club are always planning so that the Club’s unique atmosphere of friendship and social interaction will remain strong for the next 112 years plus. The Club has enjoyed a strong financial position in recent years and currently does not face any debt repayment obligations. La Grange Country Club is adding new active members from a wide base of surrounding communities and the Club’s membership allows La Grange Country Club to continue to grow as a vibrant family club with a very strong and successful history.
